Training The 'Untrainable'

Hi, my name is Teagan!

Me and my sister, Harper, run a foundation called Christmas Ponies where we buy the “untrainable “ ponies and break them. I train them to barrel race, Pole Bend, and any other speed event. The ultimate goal is to get the pony well trained so that they are sold for a good price, which means a good home too.

Right now, we are training a pony named Ginger. Ginger came to us scared of everything. You couldn’t touch her without her flinching and getting startled. On day one I immediately started desensitizing. I would put a tarp over her, drag the tarp off and repeat. I continued to find creative ways to desensitize.

I thought we were doing well so the following week I decided to try and saddle her. She did so well, with me. My sister tried to get on, but once she was on she bolted and would not settle down. This confused me. I didn’t know where to start or if the desensitizing had helped at all.

I continued desensitizing and hoped for the best. It still didn’t work. I was starting to get worried.  I was anxious that I wasn’t going to be able to help her. After months of working on desensitizing and hard work, she no longer bolts off or flinches when you go near her.
She will definitely be posted on HorseClicks when the time comes.
