Spade is one of our favorite young horses in the barn. He is personable and an absolute pleasure. We have been using him on the ranch and in the stockyards and he has the ideal foundation to move forward in any discipline. When Spade entered our program, he had about 10 rides and he has been with us about 6 months now. He was started in good hands on the outside and was never confined to a small pen. He is good minded, has never offered to buck and has come along quickly. We immediately went to using him in the stockyards weekly as well as out on the ranch. He took to his work like he’d been doing it for years. At the stockyards he opens and closes gates with ease, pushes cattle up and down the alley ways and sorts cattle in the pens. Out on the ranch we have exposed him to everything possible. We have used him for minor chores like checking fences, prowling cattle, and gathering. We have also been using him for more demanding things like making large circles to gather cattle or hunt cattle that are out or missing. We have put him in situations where he had to use his head and he is not a panicker. He’s been in thick wooded areas hunting cattle, had to cross rivers and pick his way through some rough stuff. When it comes to these kind of chores, he handles them like an older finished gelding. We have also roped a few on him in the pasture. He takes to new things well and adjusts on the fly. Spade has a really nice short lope. He will pick up both leads, stops well and is starting to want to turn around. He has speed when asked and a good trot that can cover country, but easily collects and rides slower as well. He is making a great ranch horse and could absolutely continue on that path however, we also feel that he would very much excel as a head horse or barrel horse. Spades exposure outside from the start of his riding career has made a wonderful foundation to take him any direction. This stunning young gelding will no doubt work hard to please at anything you ask of him. He is an easy keeper, trailers and backs off like an old soldier and will stand tied for hours. He sells to be completely sound in every way with no maintenance requirements.
